The Los Angeles City council voted to increase minimum wage from the federal rate of 7.25$ to 15$ an hour. The ordinance gives companies five years to slowly put this into effect and small businesses are given an extra year. The ordinance has yet to become law as it is pending approval from Mayor Eric Garcetti.
The reactions are mixed for the increase of minimum wage in the second largest city of the United States. Companies outcry in protest of the raise for making them spend more money.
But for the families scrounging pennies together trying to put food on the table, this economic development is a huge win.
