“I don’t really like the name, I’m just another person that just got hit by a plane.”
That’s what 12 year old Nicholas Baer told ABC News regarding the nickname he received after he was hit by a small plane making an emergency landing on Carlsbad State Beach in California early last month. The young boy was knee-deep in the water when the plane came skidding across the beach and struck his head with its wing, giving him a concussion and a fractured skull.
“I was kind of transitioning to skimboarding, and then the plane just came down.” said Baer, speaking about the incident for the first time since it occurred back in July.
His nearby friends Titus Matsubara and Carson Scott thought he had been crushed.
“We thought the plane was on top of him,” Titus said. “Yeah, he started to move and then Titus is like, ‘He’s alive, he’s alive,’” added Carson.
Bystanders swarmed the scene to retrieve Nicholas and held him steady until paramedics arrived. Fortunately the pilot was unharmed, but Nicholas had to be rushed to the hospital for his injuries.
“I remember waking up and I’m going to the ambulance and going to the hospital.” said Baer.
Despite the seriousness of his damages however, Nicholas was able to be released from the hospital after a mere four days. This has lead to friends dubbing him ‘Miracle Dude’, a name which he seems to think isn’t necessary. His friends have been overtly supportive about the ordeal though, with 12 of them shaving their heads to help him not feel too out-of-place, as Nicholas had to have his head shaved during treatment.
“I was happy that they did it,” he said. “It doesn’t make me feel awkward, with my shaved head.”
